Filming on Tūpuna Maunga

A permit is required for any filming or commercial still photography on the Auckland's volcanic cones (Tūpuna Maunga – ancestral mountains) regardless of its nature or scale.

Auckland's Tūpuna Maunga come under the administration of the Tūpuna Maunga Authority o Tāmaki Makaurau Authority (Tūpuna Maunga Authority). The Authority is independent of Auckland Council.

The Public Trading, Events and Filming Bylaw does not apply to maunga, Screen Auckland process applications and issue permits on their behalf.

Note: As the bylaw does not apply, neither do the bylaw exemptions. Filming for any reason other than personal use e.g. news or current affairs, must obtain a permit.

When you apply for a filming permit, the potential impact of your activity on the maunga will be taken into consideration.

We take into regard:

  • The spiritual, ancestral, cultural, customary, and historical significance of the maunga to Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau
  • That the maunga are held by Mana Whenua for the common benefit of Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau and the people of Auckland.

Ensure that you allow for plenty of processing time for a maunga location, as applications for these locations require at least 20-25 working days.
