News - ASH PRPVFX

The release of sci-fi thriller ASH to global audiences on Prime Video is putting the spotlight on Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s screen sector, with more than 340 visual effects shots created by local studio PRPVFX.

Produced by Mathew Metcalfe of GFC Films (Aotearoa New Zealand) and Nate Bolotin of XYZ Films (United States), the film features Oscar-nominated writer and director Neill Blomkamp as executive producer. ASH is directed by visionary filmmaker Flying Lotus and stars Eiza González and Aaron Paul.

Set on a remote planet, ASH follows a woman who wakes to find her space station crew brutally murdered. As she investigates the mystery, the story descends into a chilling, reality-bending nightmare.

Filmed and post-produced in Auckland, ASH is a showcase of local talent. Local company PRPVFX delivered more than 340 complex VFX shots, blending practical and digital effects to bring to life the film’s sci-fi landscapes, spacecraft and alien forms. The company collaborated closely with Flying Lotus, who also composed the film’s original score, to create the movie’s striking visual identity.

“Our team pushed the boundaries with ASH, bringing complex visuals and detailed landscapes to life,” says Carol Petrie, Senior Producer and VFX Supervisor at PRPVFX. “Every shot was crafted with precision to create an immersive, otherworldly experience. We’re incredibly proud to be part of a production that reinforces Auckland’s reputation as a leader in VFX.”

Flying Lotus praised the collaboration: “Carol and the team at PRP stunned me time and time again with their breath-taking visuals and unwavering professionalism. They transformed our small indie film into what feels like a baby blockbuster. An amazing team!”

The film has drawn acclaim for its visuals, with Variety describing the effects as “razor-sharp visuals [that] leave scratch marks on the back of your eyeballs”, and Screen Rant calling it “a visually resplendent film that is intoxicating to look at.”

In addition to PRPVFX’s standout work, local post-production company Images & Sound provided the final sound and post-production for the film, further highlighting the depth of capability in the region’s screen ecosystem.

Screen Auckland supported the production and is proud to celebrate the calibre of local talent involved.

“Auckland’s screen industry offers an unmatched combination of technical skill, creativity and a highly experienced workforce,” says Matt Horrocks, Screen Auckland Manager.

Our role at Screen Auckland is to support a thriving, sustainable industry that benefits our economy, our creatives and our communities. ASH is a powerful example of what’s possible when local talent meets international opportunity.
